The “Foundations Trail” is a kid-friendly introduction to mountain biking, trail running, or hiking, with easy terrain, numerous points of interest, and easy access from the Eastern Trailhead.
The singletrack trail begins behind the kiosk at the Eastern Trailhead, and runs through a portion of the property, bounded by the East Loop, that once consisted of a number of homesteads. The crumbling foundations of several buildings still remain, as well as remnant fences and household debris such as glass, metal, and pottery.
This area was once known as “Buchanan’s Addition”, an Iola subdivision that was platted into city lots, alleys, and streets. The Backbone Trail, heading south from the Eastern Trailhead, was once Kentucky Street.
Surface: Natural
