Despite brisk temperatures and the threat of snow, a solid group of volunteers turned up for the Lehigh Portland Trails workday on November 15th.
The Lehigh Portland Trails run through a wooded area along Elm Creek and the quarry lake. The dense growth and isolation from human populations make the site a haven for wildlife.

Limestone bluffs rise over the northeastern edge of the quarry lake, offering a dazzling view from the trails.
Back in 1979, Iola discussed turning the Lehigh Quarry Lake property into a public recreation area. It didn’t happen then, but with the development of the Lehigh Portland Trails, that vision moves closer to reality.
The Lehigh Portland cement plant in Iola was the first large cement plant west of the Mississippi river, and for many years was the largest west of Chicago.

The Kansas Trails Council has a nifty program they call “Trail in a Box”, which provides trail groups will many of the tools and equipment they need to build trail. Just add volunteers!
