The new Washington Avenue bike-ped bridge over Elm Creek, known as the “King of Trails Bridge” will have its official ribbon-cutting on Saturday, May 5th at 2:00pm. We invite you to join us as we celebrate this connection from Iola, Kansas to the Lehigh Portland Trails.
There will be bike helmet giveaways, healthy snacks, and lots and lots of celebrating. Bring your bike or put on your walking shoes to take advantage of this new connection.
The King of Trails Bridge has been on Allen County’s to-do list for many years, but through grants from organizations such as the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, the Kansas Health Foundation, the Sunflower Foundation, PeopleForBikes, and New Belgium Brewing, as well as a federal Recreational Trails Program grant administered by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, the City of Iola, the long-time dream has been realized, providing a safe and convenient connection between Iola residential areas and recreational amenities such as the Lehigh Portland Trails, the Southwind Rail Trail, and Elm Creek Park South, as well as employment opportunities in Iola’s South Industrial Park.
