The historic Hegwald Bridge is located along the Backbone Trail at Lehigh Portland Trails, spanning an intermittent stream, in place of an earlier Missouri Pacific Railroad trestle that was removed after the Lehigh Portland Cement Plant was closed in 1970.

The Hegwald Bridge was originally located on a gravel road in rural Allen County, but in an example of creative re-use, was moved to the Lehigh Portland Trails site, refurbished, and incorporated as an important element of our trail system.

Today, the Hegwald Bridge, now over a century old, continues to serve Allen County, and has become a favorite spot for photos, picnics, and bird-watching.
